Gastroscopy

Gastroscopy

Our impressive achievements in the field of gastroenterology are primarily due to the effective diagnosis of diseases in their early stages of development.

Gastroscopy allows an early and accurate diagnosis, which is essential for the effective treatment following the check-up. Gastroscopy in Israel is a modern technique carried out by experts of the Division of Gastroenterology at “Herzliya Medical Center”.

What is a gastroscopy?

Gastroscopy is a method of endoscopic study of the mucous membrane of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. This method is a minimally invasive technique for the diagnosis of diseases of the stomach in Israel. During the study, visual observation is carried out to look at the state of the mucous membrane by a flexible optical device – the endoscope, allowing a clear and magnified image of the investigated areas. The endoscope is equipped with high-precision manipulators, by which it is possible to conduct minor surgical procedures such as removal of polyps, stop bleeding from a damaged vessegastroscopy examination illustrationl and obtain tissue samples for further laboratory testing (biopsy). It is performed by inserting a thin instrument through the mouth in order to see the esophagus and the stomach.

Indications for gastroscopy in Israel

Gastroscopy is indicated for suspected inflammatory, infectious and neoplastic processes of the upper digestive system – the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. The study also allows to detect structural anatomical changes (e.g., narrowing or bulging of the wall).

In contrast to the non-invasive tests (ultrasound scan, X-ray with contrast medium and imaging), this endoscopic method allows us to estimate the initial changes of the mucous membrane, as well as to carry out surgical procedures, and biopsy as well. That is why a gastroscopy is one of the main diagnostic techniques in gastroenterology in Israel.

Preparation before the procedure

Before gastroscopy, you should refrain from eating and drinking for 12 hours.

An empty stomach is a prerequisite for conducting the procedure. Before the study, patients must notify of all known allergies.

How is a gastroscopy conducted in Israel?

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia of the oral cavity and pharynx by means of an aerosol anesthetic. Local anesthesia will prevent unpleasant sensations in the mouth during the insertion of the endoscope, as well as suppress the gag reflex. Before the introduction of the endoscope, patients receive intravenous sedation, relieving the state of tension and relaxes muscles.

During the insertion of the endoscope, patients are asked to perform swallowing. Gastroscopy is not painful, but during the introduction of the gastroscope, you may feel a possible discomfort in the throat. The diagnostic procedure is completely painless.

After the gastroscopy patients feel sleepy as a result of the sedation substance. The numbness of the mouth and pharynx lasts for two hours. Thereafter, patients are allowed to drink and eat. It is necessary to avoid driving and other activities which require attention and coordination within 24 hours after the study.

Our gastroenterologists at the “Herzliya Medical Center” guaranteed to provide accurate results of the study in an extremely short time.
