Prostate Surgery

Prostate surgery in Israel is the conventional method of treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Approximately half of the cases of prostatic hyperplasia lead to symptoms that adversely affect the quality of life and require treatment.

In Herzliya Medical Center the surgical treatment of prostatic hyperplasia is conducted with the use of conventional techniques and with the use of advanced minimally invasive techniques, which are characterized by fewer chances of complications.

Hyperplasia or adenoma prostate is a non-cancerous enlarged prostate. Unlike prostate cancer, hyperplasia is not due to the presence of tumor focus and does not involve the risk of infiltration into the surrounding tissue, and the formation of metastases. However, due to the specific localization of the prostate gland in the immediate vicinity of the bladder and the urethra, prostate hyperplasia may be accompanied by unpleasant symptoms. In particular, the patient may experience:

  • Difficulty in urination, incomplete emptying of the bladder
  • A frequent urgent need to urinate
  • Hematuria
  • Recurrent urinary tract infections

Diagnosis and conservative treatment of BPH (benign prostate hyperplasia)

For suspected prostatic hyperplasia the following check-up is conducted:

  • Digital rectal examination of the prostate
  • Ultrasound examination of the abdomen and pelvis
  • Uroflowmetry
  • Prostate biopsy

Emergency treatment of BPH is necessary when one experiences urinary retention or the development of an infection. In other cases, if the symptoms are not pronounced, leading experts in the field of urology in Israel recommend starting treatment of prostatic hyperplasia with conservative measures and constant supervision. Parallel to this, it is necessary to carry out regular surveys aimed at the early detection of prostate cancer. It is believed that the presence of hyperplasia does not increase the risk of prostate cancer, but can impede timely detection of malignant tumors.

Drug treatment of prostatic hyperplasia reduces the muscle tone of prostatic fibers. This reduces the compression of the urinary tract and is restores patency.

Prostate surgery in Israel

Surgical treatment of BPH is aimed at reducing the excessive volume of prostate tissue, preventing the outflow of urine. Prostate surgery in Israel is carried out in most cases via transurethral access (through the urethra). One possibility is the transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) – an endoscopic procedure of the partial removal of the prostate. The treatment of BPH may be through a transurethral incision (TUIP), which is an extension of the lumen of the urethra in its connection to the bladder. During TUIP the prostate tissue is partially dissected with a laser beam or an electric current. In recent years, prostate surgery in Israel is conducted by minimally invasive techniques. Minimally invasive surgery can effectively restore the patency of the urinary tract, and minimize the damage to healthy tissue.

At Herzliya Medical Center, along with traditional surgical procedures in the Urology Department modern techniques are successfully applied:

  • Transurethral microwave thermotherapy (TUMV). This method consists of heating and targeted to the degradation of prostate tissue with microwaves. A microwave emitter is located on a thin catheter that is inserted into the urethra.
  • Transurethral needle ablation (TUNA). TUNA has directional effects on the prostate with high-frequency radio waves. The doctor places RF needles through the urethra and into the prostate.
  • Transurethral electrovaporization. Electrovaporization represents the “evaporation” of excess prostate tissue by means of heating the tissue exposed to an alternating electric current of high frequency. One advantage is that electrovaporization has a low risk of bleeding. For this reason, this technique is widely used as an alternative to conventional prostate surgery in Israel in the elderly and in patients with severe concomitant diseases.

The extensive professional expertise found at Herzliya Medical Center and the use of advanced methods can achieve excellent results in the treatment of prostatic hyperplasia.

Prostate surgery cost at HMC is attractive in comparisoערמוניתn to other leading medical centers around the world. International patients arrive at Herzliya Medical Center for a full diagnosis and treatment.
